Occupational and Physical Therapy in Houston

Your Hands in Ours

Hand therapy is a specialty practice area of occupational and physical therapy that is mainly concerned with treating orthopedic-based upper extremity conditions to optimize the functional use of the hand and arm. Hand therapists, through extra training and experience, have specialized knowledge of upper extremity function. Using specialized skills in assessment and treatment, hand therapists work with their clients to prevent injury or impairment, restore functional activity, and enhance participation in daily life.

Diagnoses seen by this practice area include: fractures of the hand or arm, lacerations, amputations, burns, surgical repairs of tendons and nerves. Additionally, hand therapists treat acquired conditions such as tendonitis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and nerve entrapment syndromes such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Therapists who work in this field address biomechanical issues underlying upper-extremity conditions.

In addition, therapists use an occupation-based and client-centered approach by identifying participation needs of the client, then tailoring intervention to improve performance in desired activities (i.e. sports activities or work tasks).

The therapists at Reconstructive Orthopedic Center design diagnosis specific therapeutic exercises/activities to maximize function and may use the application of modalities to assist the patient in restoring motion, coordination and/ or strength. In addition, the therapy team is capable of fabricating custom made orthotics for specific injuries and post-op surgeries as requested by your physician. The therapists work closely with your surgeon to progress your program according to your diagnosis and post-surgical program.

Our therapy team is comprised of a physical therapist (PT), occupational therapists (OT), a certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA) and a therapy technician.
